About Me

My name is Carlee Smith and I am in my Senior year of high school. It is kind of funny that for the past twelve years I have always known what the next year would hold and where I would go, but as I embark on the last lag of this marathon I am just filled with so many different emotions because for the second time in my life I am at a major cross roads and the road I am about to take is a little foggy and I am not quite sure what the future holds. The first time I reached a major crossroad was at the end of my sophomore year. I had just finished my basketball season with a state championship and was concurrently playing club volleyball while starting on my school’s varsity softball team. Life was crazy but amazing and I was so ecstatic about how dope junior year was going to be when I ran through first base and tore my ACL and partially tore my Meniscus, and TCL. Mentally I did not let myself think the worst till I got the MRI results Monday morning and we scheduled surgery for Tuesday April 24. Waiting the month till surgery was easy as I focused on my academics and watched my softball team finish their season. Personally, I was just filled with this incomprehensible peace. However, the emotional and physical pain and suffering that came with surgery and rehab hit me like a freight train. Thankfully I had put in the hard work earlier in the year because the last month of school was rough. I missed two weeks of classes and had to force myself to care about studying for finals when I was so tired, but I managed to finish with straight A’s. After six months I took my phase two physical therapy test to see how close I was to being cleared to return to
practice
. I went in knowing I was going to fail but when I did not pass
it was one of the most devastating things to ever happen to me
. If I had passed the PT assessment, I could have played with my volleyball team and been on the court during playoffs. Instead I sat on the bench trying to keep the team hyped up. It was hard to watch as they served away the game and mentally got frustrated and gave up. I so wanted to help,
and
words can only do so much. I retook the PT test a month later and I crushed it! Even the physician who gave it to me was shocked because he thought there was no way that I could make that much progress! But he did not know that I was doing my own two-a-days besides physical therapy to get my knee back in shape. I never want to feel that useless ever again! I am so excited to start my senior year of volleyball. I have been hitting the gym hard trying to make up for lost reps. I have the opportunity to go one more round with my team and I know we won’t go down till we have left everything on the court.
