My name is Khai’ Coleman, and I’m from Birmingham Alabama. Growing up, my childhood was okay, but it came with challenges that shaped who I am today. When I was just one year old, my father passed away due to gun violence. He was the main provider for my family, and his absence has been something I’ve had to live with my entire life. My mom has raised me on her own ever since, despite being legally disabled due to a traumatic brain injury.
Because of our situation, we’ve had to depend on my grandparents and government assistance to get by. It hasn’t always been easy, especially with how expensive life is today. But I’ve been blessed. My grandparents were able to move to Helena when houses were more affordable, and they found a home in a good area near great schools. That opportunity allowed me to attend Helena High School, and I truly believe that was by the grace of God.
Football has been a huge part of my life. I started playing when I was six years old, and out of all the sports I tried—baseball, soccer, and basketball—football quickly became my favorite. I played multiple positions growing up, including running back, tight end, defensive end, and cornerback. As I got older, I began to really fall in love with the game. When I got to high school, I started playing defensive back, and that’s where I found my place. I’ve been playing DB since my freshman year, and it’s helped shape me into the player I am today.
Outside of football, I stay busy and focused. I’m 16 years old, and I have a car and a job at Publix Supermarket at Trace Crossings. I enjoy working there and helping people—it’s taught me responsibility and how to serve others. I’m also very involved in my faith. I serve at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church and Church of the Highlands, where I lead small groups and share my testimony. My relationship with God is very important to me, and I love helping others grow in their faith.
Academically, I work hard to stay on track. I have a 3.5 GPA and I’m a member of three honor societies: English, Technical, and National Honor Society. My favorite subject is history, but my best subject is math. I also really value the relationships I’ve built with my friends, classmates, and teachers at Helena High School—they mean a lot to me.
Looking ahead, my main goal is to earn a football scholarship so I can continue my education and chase my dream of playing at the next level. Whether that’s Division I, Division II, Division III, or junior college, I’m open to any opportunity. I just want a chance to prove myself and keep playing the game I love.
My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s made me stronger. Everything I’ve been through has motivated me to work harder, stay focused, and keep pushing forward. I’m determined to make the most of every opportunity I get and build a better future for myself and my family.
