Basketball has been my way of life since I was 3 years old. Since
age 3, I have been consistently honing my craft. Life took a sudden turn
for me at the age of 11 when my first trainer/coach was killed by a drunk
driver in 2016. Not only was he my first trainer/coach, but he was my big
brother. Though grief was having its way in my life, I continued to play. In
2016 and 2017, I took the football team to an undefeated season, bringing home
the 1st place championship trophy.
In 2016 and 2017, I took the basketball team to the championship. We almost won the first-place title, but my
coach suddenly passed away which sent my mind out of control. It was in 2017 that my second trainer/coach passed away from an
asthma attack, and the pain and grief capsized me. Not only was he my second
trainer/coach, but he was my father.
Battling with grief at such a young age was beyond my comprehension, yet
I continued focusing on my grades, studying the game that I love and training. I lost my voice on the basketball court, but
not my leadership. I continued playing though,
not at my fullest potential. Then in 2019, people around me, coaches,
trainers, friends and love one's started dying from Covid 19, and I found
myself questioning, "Do I take the risk, I have a lot of basketball yet to
play, I just don’t want to die." Throughout my circumstances, I
remained focused with my academics, and persevered as an honor student. I
continued studying the game I love all while keeping myself conditioned,
rebuilding my confidence, and training. The summer before my senior year
in high school, I was ready, I had vengeance in my heart with that wooden floor.
It was my time to come from underneath the rubble, then, another
challenge. I ruptured my tendon on the left and right side of my ankle
during summer camp with my high school team. The damage to my ankle
sidelined me for the remaining summer, and all my senior year. Tears
flowed as I was sidelined, but it didn't stop my knowledge of the game, and my
support for each of my teammates. I was present in every practice and
every game. After my ankle healed, I ended up injuring my right wrist
playing club ball. Determined not to be sidelined, I was driven to what I
had been strengthening for years, which is my left hand. To date, I know
longer say that I'm right hand dominant. I say that I am even hand
dominant. Currently, I train 6 days a week with a prolific trainer.
I am a solid point guard with an abundance of knowledge of the game, and an IQ
to match the years of studying the game and playing the game I love. I am a humble, disciplined young man who believes that God
gave me these gifts and talents for a purpose. I've been gifted with top
leadership qualities and have been rewarded with an Honorary Dedication for the
development of the sports programs at Sun Valley Academy. Sun Valley Academy did not have a sports
program when I first started attending in the fourth grade. I worked on
and challenged the physical education teacher on a daily basis for months, and
he finally stated, "Because of you Roman, I'm going to start a sports
program." As of today, Sun Valley Academy now have two school
locations in Arizona with various sports programs. When I visit Sun Valley, I can’t help but be
reminded of how the school didn’t have a sports program before I attended, and
because of my love for sports, especially basketball, now thousands of students
get to expound in sports.
