My Story
I've had a soccer ball at my feet since I was 9 months old. I'd pick the ball out of a pile of toys and kick it, crawl after it as fast as I could, swing my leg around to slide kick it and crawl after it again. I did this for hours. My passion for soccer has never waivered. I will play collegiate soccer because it’s been a goal before I could walk and talk. Motor Matthew and Papa, my nicknames since I stepped on the soccer field at age 5, tell a lot about me. The first came from early coaches because I’m fast and have a motor that never gives up. The second, because I lead and guide my team like a Papa (also it’s my last name so it all adds up). Multiple collegiate athletes in my family have paved the way. I know what it takes. I'm ready for the challenge.
Soccer brings me joy. I love that success needs individual precision and unselfish teamwork. When things get hard and other players give up, I dig deep. I know how to do this beyond most because I’m also a state placing wrestler. I push myself and others to play our best and finish out a game or practice. I try for every ball and play but also work hard off the field. I maintain a 4.0 GPA, take AP and college concurrent courses and rank 10th of 386 in my high school class. I always want to know how to improve my game, becoming better, faster, and stronger. Sixteen years of soccer have taught me to embrace hard work, lay it all out there and improve each and every year.
