I’m Malik Olive, Class of 2028 at North Clayton High School. Growing up at North Clayton taught me how to work for everything I want. A lot of people overlook schools like mine because the building is old or things don’t look the best, but that never stopped me from believing in myself or my school.
Basketball means a lot to me because it taught me discipline, patience, and how to keep going even when things get hard. I play wing, and I’ve spent a lot of time working on my game, whether that’s early mornings, late nights, or extra hours in the gym. One thing that really changed me was getting injured at the beginning of my freshman season and missing half the year. It was tough having to sit out and watch instead of being on the court with my team, but it made me mentally stronger and made me appreciate the game even more.
When I came back and made varsity as a 10th grader, I knew it wasn’t luck. It came from staying focused, working hard, and not giving up even after setbacks. That experience taught me that hard times can either slow you down or make you stronger depending on how you respond to them.
I want people to remember me as a leader more than anything. Somebody who stayed humble, worked hard, and always tried to motivate the people around him. I know what it feels like to be doubted or underestimated, and that’s part of what pushes me every day.
North Clayton is more than just a school to me. I really believe we’re overdue for rebuilding and better opportunities because the students here deserve it. I want to help put North Clayton back on the map and represent my school the right way every time I step on the court.
After high school, I want to play college basketball and continue chasing my dreams. If basketball doesn’t work out, I want to become a firefighter and still find a way to help people and make a difference in my community. No matter what path I take, I just want to make my family, school, and community proud.
